Washing a horse blanket? Here's how it's easy!
"What's that crawling dirty and muddy through the paddock and wind? That's the pony, in his blanket, stinking terribly!"
Then it's high time to wash the horse blanket! And everyone who covers his horse knows: Keeping horse blankets clean in winter can be difficult. No wonder many owners opt for a professional blanket wash including impregnation (especially for an outdoor blanket).
If this is not possible for financial or time reasons, or Mr. or Mrs. Reiter*in anyway rather the type "DIY" decides for the variant "Home-washed". The good news: especially lighter horse blankets can be washed at home in the washing machine. The prerequisite is that your washing machine is big enough. The bad news: it is possible to do incredibly wrong. That's why here are our tried and tested washing instructions.
Washing instructions horse blanket in the washing machine
Step: 1 Remove as much hair, dirt and mud as possible. A blast with the hose or a good brush will work wonders. A vacuum cleaner is good for removing the hair.
Step 2: Now put the blanket into a large net wash bag (see e.g. laundry net Silence) or an old pillowcase. This will prevent the hooks and buckles from damaging the machine and leaving too much horse hair in the drum.
Step 3: To protect your blanket, remove all detergent residue from the detergent container and choose a gentle delicate wash cycle.
Step 4: Fabric softener and normal detergent can destroy the impregnation of your blanket, so use only special blanket detergent such as HEY Sport Blanket Wash or HEY Sport Impra Wash to refresh the impregnation(by the way, we also sell them in the store).
Step 5: Do not throw the blanket in the dryer, but hang it up! If possible in a relatively dry room, then it will not take so long.
Insider Tip:
By the way, there are special winter blankets with particularly smooth and easy to clean fabric(eg, the Toronto pasture blanket). Mostly here not the whole blanket must be washed and it is enough to clean dirt spots brush or with a damp cloth.
